Could be asthma: Cough medications are not a good idea in a young child. If the cough is persistent, worsens with running or is worse between 2 and 6 am, it could be asthma, particularly if there are allergies in the family. If the cough is persistent, see your doctor. Coughs sometimes respond to a steamy shower, try that until you figure it out.

Most likely she has bronchospasm which is common among young children. Possible triggers include allergens, smoke exposure and viral illness. Was she ill recently? Her risk for asthma is higher if there is a history of allergic disease or asthma among first degree relatives. Other less common causes should be considered. Discuss whether a bronchodilator is indicated. Watch for shortness of breath.
