Genetics and diet: Essential hypertension is probably genetic, but too much sodium in your diet, lack of exercise and excessive alcohol intake can all add to difficulty controlling blood pressure. One other cause is obstructive sleep apnea. Resistent hypertension can often be linked to untreated sleep apnea.
