A member asked:

I recently was diagnosed with a 2.2 cm multinodular goiter on the right lobe of my thyroid. does thyroid affect the immune system?

Generally not: Not unless it's not functioning properly, which is different that it it has a nodule. If the nodule itself is 2.2 cm, then it needs to be biopsied.

Autoimmune diseases: A goiter does not make you more susceptible to infections, if that is your question. But a common cause of goiter is hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune dysfunction of your thyroid. In most people with hashimotos, only the thyroid is affected.
