Ouch: Could be bruise, tendinitis, cartilage injury, or synovial irritation. As long as things are still working, then best treated with ice, rest, hamstring stretches, and core strengthening. If no better in a couple weeks then time to get it checked.

Get checked: This can be a bone bruise, patellar tendon contusion or partial tear, a meniscus tear, tibial plateau bone bruise or small break. If its not getting better by 4-6 weeks, get checked by orthopaedic surgeon. They will get an x-ray and if nothing is bad on x-ray an MRI is ordered to look for the soft tissue injuries. Ice nsaids and reduced activity for now is usual course of action.
