Pain on deep breath: The most common cause of acute pain on taking a deep breath in is "pleurisy", also known as 'the devil's grip'. This is due to a cold virus that gets into the lining of the lung, making it raw, and when you take a deep breath, it rubs against the ribs and hurts. This will go away by itself in a few more days. Other common causes are muscle sprains. A rare cause could be blood clot or cancer.
