A member asked:

Can taking paxil (paroxetine) make you gain weight?

Yes: Most of the medications in this class (ssri's) have a known side effect of weight gain. Please discuss this with your prescribing doctor. It is often more important to treat depression or other issues than to worry about weight gain. If weight gain is a major concern, it needs to be discussed and see what options are open to you.

Yes: Out of the ssri medications, Paxil (paroxetine) seems to be the one most common to contribute to weight gain (and this is on the fda adverse reaction list for this medication. Other ssris such as Prozac and zoloft (sertraline) do not have weight gain listed by fda as possible adverse reaction. Talk with your provider to consider alternatives if this concerns you.
