Constipation after surgery?

Depends on severity: After abdominal surgery or just general anesthesia, the intestinal tract tends to be lethargic - called post-operative ileus. It typically takes only 3-5 days to begin passing gas (farting) and having bowel movements again. Other problems like bowel obstruction may intervene. Being as active as possible, perhaps using a rectal suppository and, if permitted by your physician, a laxative, may help.
