Could be serious: This is impossible to say without knowing more. Excessive day time sleepiness can be caused by things as simple as sleep deprivation and poor sleep habits to more serious conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, breathing problems that cause the carbon dioxide level in the blood to rise, (such as copd), drug side effects, and many other conditions. It merits a discussion with your wife's docto.

Both: Somnolence is usually a sign that more sleep or rest is needed, and it can take a while to catch up from sleep deprivation, but falling asleep while doing chores can be dangerous -falls accidents etc. It could reflect an underlying medical condition, medication effects, or other serious problem. This needs medical assessment asap for safety and health reasons.
