Several things: There are several things that can cause your spotting- you could have had anovulatory cycle where you did not ovulate and as a result can have some dysfunctional bleeding, a simple cyst that is resolving or where you did not fully shed the lining of your uterus with this cycle. Not to worry. Things should be fine and you should go back to having regular cycles.

Could be.: Periods are more likely to be irregular if ovulation does not occur that month. During ovulation, Progesterone levels rise and stabilize the lining in the uterus, 2 weeks later if you are not pregnant then all the tissue comes out like a normal period. If no ovulation occurs, then the lining is not stable and bleeding can be more erratic (like you describe.) if this is a pattern, consult your doc).
