Prescribed?: Tramadol is a pain medication that can be used to treat back pain. If it is prescribed by a physician, they have evaluated your need for it and it can be taken as prescribed. If it is a medication from someone else, then you should see a doctor for evaluation.

Tramadol is fine: Tramadol is a great option. I would add a muscle relaxer as well, anything other than soma, (carisoprodol) which is nothing more than a tranquilizer.

One can: Tramadol is a pain medication. It does not treat the cause. It is a synthetic and is not felt to be addicting. It should not be used long term until/unless all "fixable" causes have been excluded. There are also other types of medications for chronic pain that are not specifically pain pills.
