Both work well BUT: Atarax is relatively safe (altho as with all drugs some sideeffects possible). Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine which class of drugs are potentially addictive if taken over a longer period of time - best used for a short period otherwise there are other prescription drugs which work - generally the class of drugs knon as antidepressants.

Anxiety: The one that your mental health professional prescribed for you specifically for the anxiety you are experiencing. Atarax is an antihistamine whereas xanax (alprazolam) is a fast acting muscle relaxer that is used for acute anxiety. Please ask your doctor before simply treating.
