Eye irritation: Prolonged focused tasks such as reading, computer use, electronic device use requires tightening of the ciliary muscle. This can lead eye irritation and vague headache. This can be avoided by periodically changing focus to a more distant object.

Yes: Resting your eyes will help. Refractive error changes such as myopia and presbyopia may not reverse until the eye grows or a cataract forms or is surgically corrected.

Of course: Incorrect focus causes the eye to continually search for the clearest vision leading to eyestrain. It's quick and easy to check for a new prescription - just call your ophthalmologist.

Sure: If you are having problems focusing up close (presbyopia) or having eye alignment problems or dry eyes. These are common causes of eyestrain while reading. Best to be seen by your ophthalmologist to figure out what is going wrong. If only your near vision is causing problems it usually can be cured with glasses.
A 38-year-old member asked:

How long does it usually take to recover from eye strain?

2 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in
Dr. Andrew Shatz
Ophthalmology 26 years experience
It depends on...: ...The cause. Eye strain from dry eyes can recover within minutes of lubricating the eyes or resting them. Strain brought about from an uncorrected need for glasses will not disappear until the you have your vision corrected. It is a good idea to see your eye doctor if you have continued eye strain, to determine whether you need computer glasses.

Focus alignment: Usually, eyestrain is caused by focus problems - either presbyopia or astigmatism. Less frequently, alignment of the eyes (strabismus) can cause strain. Best to be check by your ophthalmologist for focus and alignment, get the clearest glasses you can and rest when doing lengthy activities.
