Yes, but: Many gp's may not feel comfortable treating you for psychosis, and may want a psychiatrist also involved in your care. Psychiatrists follow patients in order to see that medications are providing helpful results, and that side effects are minimized.

Possibly: I agree with Dr. Pappas. The seriousness of the condition you are treated for may make treatment by a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner a better option. Your general practice doctor would need to be both knowledgeable and comfortable with managing antipsychotic medications.
