He may: Any physician is authorized to prescribe antipsychotics however gps prefer that you should be evaluated by a psychiatrist first if there is a need for antipsychotic.

Possibly: A general practioner may or may not feel comfortable prescribing antipsychotic medications. I most often see antipsychotic medications being prescribed by psychiatrists.
