Medical referral: A family doctor or internist will refer a patient when the patient needs a particular specialty to treat the patient beyond their scope. This could be a gyn doctor, an orthopedist, or gastroenterologist, etc. These are area of specialty that deal with diagnosis and treatment of medical problems which need treatment and or diagnosis beyond the scope of your internist or family physician.

Few reasons: If the person needs a procedure done that a specialist does or if the doctors need further testing or treatment decisions from an expert in the field.

When to refer: Hi marketi, that is different with every FP and IM doc as well as the disease. Some IM docs have all the tools they need for diagnosis and treatment. Some do not. As a general rule, once an initial workup has been done and a diagnosis made(or not) then a sub-specialist is usually consulted to help with management. Some health systems require referral to a sub-specialist at a certain point as well.
