Several things: This could be something you were born with, like a brachial cleft cyst. It could also be a lymph node which became big from a throat infection and never went back to normal size. Since you say it's on the side of the neck, it's probably not an enlarded thyroid gland. You could have an ultrasound to better evaluate it. Doesn';t hurt to do it!
