It depends: There are ovarian cysts that will go away over time, and others that are more serious and need surgery. Birth control pills prevent many types of cysts, and thus can be helpful in preventing cysts. It sounds as if your dr thought your cyst had a good chance of going away, and so you should wait. Often surgery can be avoided.
