What questions do i need to ask my doctor about weight loss surgery?

Which Dr?: Are you referring to your primary care, your surgeon, your gi, or psychologist? All are important to consult before undergoing surgery as there are many issues to consider. There are significant psychosocial changes that occur with having surgery in addition to the medical risks / benefits / side effects. Certainly your surgeon's experience, bedside manner, and skill are important. Good luck.

Options & exp & supp: Best to talk to a weight loss surgeon. Find a surgeon who has a good reputation, a support group, and compassion. Questions to ask: what procedure is best for me? Who will i see postoperatively? How many bypass or sleeve procedures have you performed? Do you use any type of fibrin sealant (like a super glue)? Do you have a newsletter or electronic support?

Lots: There is no one surgery that is right for everyone. Talk to your bariatric surgeon and talk about all your options, realistic expectations, and make sure he/she takes the time to answer all of your questions. Bariatric surgery is a life changing event. Also make sure they have experience in bariatrics. Consider having your surgery only at a center of excellence.

Best Dr. to....: Speak to is a surgeon who performs the procedure. Ask them at what weight do they recommend the surgery and after what modalities you can try to lose. Certainly, every surgeon is going to want you to go on a weight loss diet and exercise regimen first. Referrals to heart, lung and psychiatry, and often a sleep study may be preformed first before surgery is considered. Best wishes.
