Yes, Normal: It is normal to have a numb area in your leg after back surgery. I am assuming that he had a lumbar disc surgery. Usually, this numbness gets better with time. Time could be months. It is nothing to worry about.

It is not the norm : But it can happen in a small percentage of patients with some recovering and others being permanent. It is a known risk of the surgery in terms of neurologic ones. If that is the only symptom after his operation there is no real need for oncern and it may improve over time.
