It varies.: Most women (not on any kind of birth control/hormones) should have a monthly period. Some medical conditions cause irregular periods, and this is not normal. Women approaching menopause will probably have irregular periods until they stop completely. A person's age, medical history, exam, and labs will help determine if this is normal. Check with your doctor if you are having irregular cycles.

Not always: Reasons for irregularity include weight gain or loss, breastfeeding, alcohol use, eating disorders, marked emotional stress, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cervical polyps, polycystic ovarian syndrome, excessive exercise & pregnancy. When a girl has just started menstruating & around the time of menopause periods can be irregular.
