What's being treated: It depends upon the condition being treated, and the particular symptoms you're trying to control. If the condition is pcos, and the symptom is excess hair growth, spironolactone may be sufficient by itself. But it takes 6-9 months to see any change in hair growth. Ocps help by suppressing testosterone-like hormones, and may provide add'l benefit. Ocps can ^ risk for blood clots & some cancers.

Varies: If a woman conceives while taking spironolactone - she just needs to stop that medication when she finds out she is pregnant. If you are using birth control already you do not need the pill as well. There is a slight increase in the risk for a DVT while using the pill, otherwise the pill does not do any harm to the body in the short or long term.
