Not by themselves: Both antipsychotics and antidepressants are complicated. Some depressed people have hallucinations, delusions, and extreme agitation with their condition. These people need antipsychotic medicines along with antidepressants to get well. Also some cases of treatment-resistant depression respond to low-dose antipsychotic medicines added to the antidepressant.

Augmentation: Antipsychotics are prescribed usually for two reasons: 1. If the depression is accompanied by symptoms of psychosis ( hallucinations or delusions or ideas of reference). 2. To augment an antidepressant in resistant cases. Antipsychotic medication is not any more complicated than some other medications . Every medicine has some kind of side effects and some are more serious than others.
