Several causes: There can be other causes for pain around the joint area besides arthritis. Tendinitis, bursitis and mechanical issues can cause pain. The tests needed depend on the type of arthritis a history and physical exam dictate. See a doctor.

Exam by rheumatology: There is no reliable blood test for arthritis. It is a clinical diagnosis based on inflammation of the synovial cells lining the joints that can be seen as joint swelling on exam in RA or a typical pattern of joint pain without swelling in osteoarthritis.X-rays can show some more advanced joint damage but MRI with contrast is most sensitive.Rheum factor & ccp antibody can help confirm suspected ra.
