Ligament/meniscus: Sprained ligament has pain localized to the ligament with some degree of instability--a feeling of giving way. A meniscus has mechanical symptoms of locking or painful clicking. See an orthopedic surgeon.

Variable: Ligament will hurt over the ligament with possible instability. Meniscus pain will be pain on the joint line with catching and popping that can be painful and give sensation of your knee giving way. Go see an ortho doctor.
