Dystrophic nail: The toenail may be changing in shape and thickness as a result of repetitive trauma from shoes, direct injury, fungal infection, aging and other causes. This would cause undo pressure on the nail bed. Try filing down the nail with an emory board or go see a foot specialist (podiatrist). If you injured the nail recently you may have a hematoma (bleeding under the nail) this may need to be drained.
