Not often: If it is entirely due to Insulin resistance from obesity, then significant weight loss "might" resolve it. However, it is rarely this simple. Diet modification, weight loss, and increased physical activity can significantly simplify management, so are definitely worth the effort.

Not really: With medications, and diet modications, and close follow up your diabetes can be controlled very well. There are some surgeries that you may be a candidate for if you are also overweight. These surgeries have been shown to be better at controlling diabetes, and often can make your diabetes go into remission where your sugars are controlled without medications. But it isn't really "cured".
