I have pain in both sides on and off. one side one day, possibly the other side another day. i'm going to urgent care for this. will i need an x-ray?

Maybe, maybe not: A primary care doctor is a better doctor to see for this, rather than an urgent care doctor. Usually for first visits, an x-ray is not needed. It will depend on where the symptoms are, how severe they are, and on the judgement of the doctor. "pain in both sides" is sort of vague... Both sides of what?
