Maybe both?: You are describing what sounds like tophi. Gout and kidney disease go hand in hand. Uric acid building up in the body can be due to sluggish kidneys' inability to excrete it adequately. On the other hand, too much uric acid may lead to kidney disease itself. If you have had gout in the past, you should be on treatment for this and following a diet low in purines (your doctor can help with this).
