Probable cavity: You probably knocked something loose from your tooth (like rotted tooth material or an old filling). See your dentist for treatment.

Decayed tooth struct: One of the more prevalent areas for teeth to succumb to damage is the 'contact' area with adjacent teeth. Even if there were no signs of cavities upon visual inspection, decay often develops in these hidden areas. Only quality digital x-rays help diagnose these conditions. The fact that the tooth opened a noticeable 'gap' may be a blessing in disguise- letting you know that there is a problem.

Cavity in between: Cavities can develop unseen in between your teeth (like a cave). When the cavity gets big enough the top of the "cave" collapses and suddenly you see a hole or gap that was not there the day before. Dentists take x-rays to help find these cavities before they get so large. Please see you dentist asap for an exam.
