If it stays longer..: Isolated hand pain of short duration could be related to a whole number of issues. As long as you don’t have any nerves symptoms (e.g. Numbness, tingling, weakness), you can wait a day or two. If it is a mild sprain or inflammation, it will subside. If it does not or you develop any of the above symptoms you should get a medical consult.

Not yet.: It is difficult to answer. Where is the pain? Sharp or dull? Activity related? Aggravating factors? Alleviating factors? Any numbness, swelling, redness? Did you have some trauma to the hand recently or a while back? These are questions you can think about before seeing a doctor for treatment. The answers will help him help you.
