If lateral, meralgia: One possibility is a very common condition called meralgia paresthetica. This causes severe burning pain in the lateral thigh with no real weakness or other symptoms further down in the leg. It is caused by entrapment of a nerve branch under the inguinal ligament, is often relieved by weight loss, and can be the first symptom of early diabetes. If severe, medications or nerve block can help.
