Hoarseness: It is variable. It can be a few days to permenantly. Very rarely is it permenant. The recurrent laryngeal nerve, which innervates your larynx requires retraction during an anterior cervical fusion. Many times the nerve gets "bruised" called a neuropraxia, which will eventually recover. If you don't see any improvement, not complete recovery, in 6-8 weeks, i'd talk with your spine surgeon.

This can happen with: Any approach to the cervical spine from the front or anteriorly but is of a low risk and it is usually transient resolving over several weeks to months, rarely being permanent.
