My big toe has been swollen, red & sore for months. doc thought fungal. lost nail. 3 mts of terbinafine not helped. pain persists. i play soccer!

Nail changes: Get a 2nd opinion. This could be a chronic ingrown nail or something that requires a biopsy.

Soccer toe: Pain under the toe nail can be due to worn out or poorly fitting soccer boots. Make sure you are fitted and padding the top of the toe can definitely help. Losing a nail due to a subungual (beneath the nail) hematoma is not that uncommon. Should these fail, see your doctor.

Diagnostic tests: An MRI should be taken to determine if their is a underlining infection (if x-ray negative) and a biopsy of the nail.
