More Investigations: If the pain and swelling is present almost 3 months after ankle injury, it is more than a simple sprain. You need to see a foot and ankle specialist who may do MRI exam to see if a ligament needs surgical correction. Sometimes a plaster cast is used to rest the ankle and allow healing.
