Common problem: Tooth grinding or clenching is a common problem and often the simplest treatment is to have an appliance fabricated for her to wear to sleep that will prevent the grinding. In addition to being annoying to you, she is harming her teeth, causing them to wear and eventually crack.

How old: If your sister is roughly over 12 years she will likely have all her permanent teeth. A professionally made guard is most useful, but if she is younger any treatment may have to wait. Visit a dentist to diagnose for sure.

Teeth Grinding: Teeth grinding doesn’t usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged including affecting her jaw. It often occurs during sleep and is more likely caused by an abnormal bite or crooked teeth. After the age of 12 she can have a mouth guard made to protect her teeth from grinding during sleep. If stress is the reason ask her physician or dentist.

Depends on her age: Recent studies have shown a correlation between airway obstruction and grinding in children. So, a visit to your pediatrician and/ or ENT is in order. For children who grind and have permanent teeth in their mouth, a soft and flexible night guard can be used. These guards have to be changed frequently to accommodate growth and development. There ate neurological contributing factors. See dentist.
