Post-infectious: Sometimes an acute, self-limited infection of the GI tract changes the native intestinal micro-organism composition temporarily, and can result in increased gas. It can also alter motility temporarily, as well as decrease one's ability to digest lactose. A lactose free diet and some over the counter acid suppressing medications can be helpful. Resolution is usually in 2 weeks, but can be longer.
