Radioactive iodine: The thyroid takes up iodine, and most thyroid cancers take it up. Therefore the radioactive iodine gets into the tumor and kills it. The test is a lower does of radioiodine to see if there is any thyroid or tumor left. Other tests are important: ultrasound, blood thyroglobulin. An endocrinologist should be involved in the decisions.
