Possible Side Effect: 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-htp) converts, in uncertain amounts, to the brain chemicals serotonin and melatonin. Serotonin is an anti depressant also formed normally in the body but increased production--such as occurs by taking 5-htp--can have unpredictable effects. Likewise, melatonin, another brain chemical--when increased by 5-htp --can sometimes have an opposite effect like insomnia and agitation.
