A member asked:

Does an implantable heart monitor hurt? do they give me pain meds?

Not really: These are very small devices that are inserted under the skin in the chest and after the first few days the chest should not hurt at all. For the immediate post procedure period, they should give you some pain medication.

A little: An implantable loop recorder (ilr) is a 0.5 x 2 CM device (think memory stick type) that goes under your skin in the 3rd rib space on the left side of the chest. The surgical procedure is done under local anesthesia and the incision is very small (~ 1 cm). There is minimal pain involved that is usually controlled with tylenol (acetaminophen).
