Hand washing: It is estimated that 80%-85% of all respiratory infections are passed though hand-to-hand contact. Good handwashing (warm soapy water for 30-45 seconds) is very effective in preventing flu's, colds, and other infections.

Chicken soup/fluids: On the first or second day may try tamiflu prescription, otherwise only otc meds. For cough--mucinex dm, for pain or fever-- acetaminophen, for nasal congestion--antihistamines with decongetants ( avoid if htn, tachycardia or coronary disease ). Recently some advocate zinc pills (50 mg/ day?)very high fever or chills, difficulty to breath, non stop cough, worsening symptoms require a dr.

Vaccine: One of the best ways to prevent the flu is to be vaccinated against it. Also, using a humidifier in your bedroom or house can help; viruses have a tough time surviving in humid air. (thanks to david escobar, med student).
