Yes: A tooth extraction is a surgery. It varies from being a simple extraction where no bone or gums are involved, to a surgical extraction, which includes the removal of some bone and incision on the gum. But, it is a surgery. If you have an indication to take the antibiotics, i would follow the advice of your treating provider. Providers may approach the same procedure differently. Find one you trust.

Yes: It's surgery. That's what the "s" is in dds. When you make an incision or create a hole in tissue--that is surgery. Drilling a hole in a tooth is technically considered surgery also. Depending on your susceptibility to post operative infection, and the current status of the tooth to be removed, dentist often rx antibiotics to improve outcome.

YES AND NO: The difficulty of the extraction is surgery if a flap or removal of bone is done with suturing .If an infection is present or the extraction difficult than antibiotics is the treatment of choice.A loose tooth could be considered surgery if bleeding is involved. Anything removed from mouth could be called surgery.

Yes: A dentist would normally prescribe antibiotics for various reasons including an existing infection and a susceptibility to infection for various medical reasons. If an infection is already present, you should start antibiotic coverage immediately. Every dentist has their own protocol regarding antibiotic coverage. If you trust the dentist, trust his advice. If not, find a dentist that you do trust.

Yes: The extraction of a tooth is considered a surgical procedure. Antibiotics are indicated to treat an infection, or help minimize the risk of an infection in a compromised patient. If a patient has no drug allergies, penicillin would be the antibiotic of choice for a dental infection. If the patient has other medical problems, his or her md may recommend a different antibiotic regimen.
