Why does my back hurt only after i've been sleeping for a few hours?

If your mattress is soft and old you may need a new one. Your back needs support. You can place a plywood board under your mattress for support to see if it helps, if not than a new one is needed. Also try sleeping on your side instead of on your back or buy a back brace and sleep with it on.

This usually occurs in an individual that has osteoarthritis and has been lying in a single position without movement for a long period of time. In order for osteoarthritic joints to remain lubricated, they need to keep moving. A soft mattress promotes nonmovement and a firm mattress promotes movement through the night, hence the recommendation for a firm mattress.
