Yes: Only clean the outer part of the ear and don't insert into the hole. You will wind up pushing in more wax then getting it out.

No: Mostly, the wax just gets pushed into a plug in the ear canal. Dripping hydrogen peroxide (3% from a pharmacy) diluted 1:1 with warm water into the ears cleans them much better and more safely.
