Labor and delivery can cause significant trauma to the vagina, cervix and uterus. They all need time to heal. Depending on the trauma of the delivery (whether stitches were needed, forceps were used or there was tearing) the minimum time for healing is 4 weeks. The more traumatic deliveries may require 6-8 weeks for recovery. Intercourse earlier than this may result in pain, bleeding and infection
