Not easily answered: Creatinine level all by itself does not determine the need for dialysis. If the total remaining kidney function keeps him symptom free and blood tests do not have dangerous chemical abnormalities then he may be able to manage his condition with medications for awhile longer. At age 70 if his creatinine or creatinine clearance is 6.5, it is likely though he will need dialysis soon.

Dialysis?: If your father has a creatinine clearance (cc), he should be on dialysis with a cc of 7 ml/min. It seems that he has polycystic kidney disease (pkd) which has progressed, as it normally does, to end stage renal failure. Have him see a nephrologist to check his hemoglobin, phosphorus, calcium and intact parathyroid hormone levels. A cc result is based on one's creatinine and is different from it.

Kidney cysts and dz: From what you write, it seems like your father may have polycystic kidney disease. Is this accurate? If so, his serum creatinine of 6.5 is high. Occasionally kidneys lose function from medication, like ACE Inhibitor. This needs nephrologist evaluation.
