Massage & ? meds: The warm rag is jsut wiping away the secretions - it's not treating anything. You can actually hold the warm cloth on the eye as a compress, and then massage the tear duct at the inner corner of the eye by the nose. Massage pressing toward the nose, not the eye. If the warm compresses and massage don't do the trick, they may need antibiotic drops/ointment to clear up the infection.

Pink Eye: You are describing symptoms of pink eye or conjunctivitis. Take your girls to the pediatrician to determine whether they need antibiotic eye drops or not.
