Depends: Two kinds of "cartilage" in knee..Surface cartilage which is white shiny cover on bones and meniscal which is the "shock absorber" between bones on each side. Exam history and MRI help diagnose. Surgery to remove or repair meniscal tears. Articular cartilage may need surgery to smooth or resurface it. It does not "heal". Meniscal surgery can be very simple, articular damage can be very tricky.
