A member asked:

I am a runner, should i take glucosamine supplements to help preserve knee cartilage?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It won't hurt: You ask a question on which there is no data. Glucosamine and chondroitin are proteoglycans which in turn are major components of cartilage. These substances are proposed to help ease the pain of osteoarthritis, especially in the knees. Not all studies have shown they help but several have. Two studies of which I am aware suggest they may help to retard progression of oa.
