See orthopedist: Sounds like you might have a floating body if your knee locks. Only a good orthopedist can sort this out for you.

Orthopedic eval: A grinding knee that locks on you is often a sign of a mensical tear. This should be evaluated by an orthopedist. Depending on the severity this can go away on its own or require surgery. If on the other hand your meniscus is eroded away you may need knee replacement.

Cartilage: Hi! grinding and locking of the knee can be related to a tear in the meniscus (cartilage) or advance to arthritis of the knee. Ligament problems usually cause instability of the joint with giving out and gait unsteadiness.
