Knee pain = ortho: sounds like you need to see a medical professional, specifically one who can examine you and your knee. Orthopedics or a sports medicine specialists or your PMD to start would be helpful in diagnosing you and avoiding more possible damage (if any) to your joint

Yeah, : you mean grinding. Cartilage is the smooth gristle that allows knees to move smoothly. When it is broken, either pieces of it move around (grind, and catch) or there's no cartilage left and the bone grinds on bone. The broken bits have a better likelihood of surgery helping. If there's just no cartilage left, replacement (and you're too young) is the only really good fix.
